Financed through an integrated partnership of private, public, and First Nations capital, this session examines how the transaction was structured, what it means for grid resilience and energy security, and why its Indigenous equity ownership model is attracting attention as a replicable framework for critical infrastructure investment across the country. The Royal Bafokeng, a Setswana-speaking Indigenous nation in South Africa, used pooled member earnings in the 19th century to buy back ancestral land and to secure title when most Black South Africans were barred from owning property.
