The Project partners closely with Indigenous leaders, demonstrating how empowering communities through effective governance leads to lasting prosperity and resilience.

Case Study: The Southern Ute Growth Fund, founded in 2000, manages the business and investments of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. It oversees a diverse portfolio aimed at long-term tribal prosperity. As of March 2024, the Tribe held US$3.5 billion in available funds, with business units valued at US$4 billion.

Alaska Native Corporations (ANCs) are vital to Alaska’s economy, generating about US$11 billion annually and employing over 17,000 people, which contributes over US$1 billion to Alaska’s payrolls. With a collective ownership of 140,000 Indigenous shareholders, ANCs employ nearly 50,000 globally and are increasingly investing in international businesses. This panel will explore the ANCs story and share valuable lessons for Indigenous nations worldwide.

Access to affordable capital remains one of the most significant barriers to Indigenous equity investment in major energy, mining, and infrastructure projects. With the right set of financial tools and strong partnerships between First Nations, industry, and governments, bridging this gap is achievable. Launch of the Indigenous Utilities Paper: The Building of Indigenous-Owned Electrical Utilities in Canada

FNMPC is pleased to announce the launch of the Indigenous Utilities paper, funded by the Clean Economy Fund. Drawing on an FNMPC visit to four Tribal Utilities in Arizona – as well as insights from other Indigenous-owned utilities and field experts – the paper explores why Indigenous nations may form a utility, a range of possible Indigenous utility models, as well as what the barriers, challenges and risks may be. It provides 16 recommendations for First Nations and governments to support Indigenous-owned utilities in Canada.

This session will feature a special opening of the Toronto Stock Exchange live from the First Nations Major Projects Coalition 2025 annual conference, marking a symbolic moment for Indigenous economic participation in Canada’s capital markets. John McKenzie, CEO of TMX Group, will provide insights into the evolving role of Indigenous investment in public markets and the opportunities for greater inclusion.

A Call to Action: Forging Canada’s Economic Future with Indigenous Partnerships

Geopolitical tensions are rising rapidly, and with that rise, global competition is intensifying. Given this, securing Canada’s economic future requires bold action. With the right policies, investments, and inclusive governance, Canada can strengthen and diversify its economy. By supporting meaningful Indigenous full decision-making regarding all projects on our lands and waters, we can build a more resilient and competitive country. This afternoon’s discussions will focus on novel strategies to drive economic growth, enhance global competitiveness, and ensure all Canadians benefit from a prosperous future.

Indigenous leadership on corporate boards strengthens governance and promotes good business development. Despite comprising 5% of Canada’s population, Indigenous Peoples hold only 0.4% of Canadian corporate director roles. Increasing Indigenous board representation requires identifying Indigenous leaders, creating pathways to board roles, and ensuring recruitment values merit, diverse perspectives, and long-term success. This session will feature the US Latino Corporate Directors Association (LCDA). In 2024, the association facilitated 550+ executive introductions and 140+ board searches. LCDA has helped Latinos secure 5.4% of Fortune 500 board seats, positioning the association as a key force in diversifying corporate leadership. The subsequent panel will convene Indigenous professionals and corporate leaders to explore the challenges and opportunities for similarly increasing Indigenous board representation in Canada.
