Session 2 – Presentation & Panel – Keys to Indigenous Commercial Success

Monday, April 28
9:01am – 9:02am

Dr. Kalt will share powerful insights from Harvard University’s decades-long research into the key factors behind the success or failure of Indigenous businesses. Drawing on the work of the Harvard Project on Indigenous Governance and Development, he will explore how strong, culturally aligned self-governance drives sustainable economic growth. The Project partners closely with Indigenous leaders, demonstrating how empowering communities through effective governance leads to lasting prosperity and resilience.

Case Study: The Southern Ute Growth Fund, founded in 2000, manages the business and investments of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe. It oversees a diverse portfolio aimed at long-term tribal prosperity. As of March 2024, the Tribe held US$3.5 billion in available funds, with business units valued at US$4 billion.
