Meet The Artist
Joseph Lane is an Ojibwe artist from Couchiching First Nation,
now living in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He was commissioned to create the artwork for our 10th Annual Conference. His artwork reflects the idea of learning in new ways by coming together as a community, across Nations, across borders, and in relationship with the land. It speaks to the growing importance of international relationships and trade between Indigenous Nations, and what becomes possible when those connections are built on shared values and mutual respect. When we set aside our differences, we create a strong foundation for future generations
to grow and thrive.
The work speaks to the cyclical nature of life. Nothing is permanent, but under the right conditions, growth continues. Like a flower, each generation learns from the one before it and carries that knowledge forward. The figures at the centre are coloured with the medicine wheel, representing how cultures from all directions are needed to build a better future, one that moves beyond the singular “I” and toward collective responsibility.
